Mines of Kardan

Mines of Kardan is an ongoing solo project I am working on. Mines of Kardan is a souls like action game where the player facing against challenging enemies and bosses to test their skills.

Combat

I designed the combat for this project to reflect the combat of a souls like action RPG. The player has 4 forms of attack. A light attack, a heavy attack, a charge attack, and a special attack known as ‘Magic Surge’. The player also has the ability to block.

The player also has the movement abilities of walking, running, and dodging. Every action the player takes outside of walking, blocking, and magic surge all take stamina. If the player does not have the right amount of stamina for an action they are unable to perform said action.

If a player attacks an enemy enough, they will enter a ‘stagger’ state, where the player is able to deal damage freely without having to worry about the enemy attacking for a short period of time.

The player has two items they can use to help in combat. Healing items and magic surge restoration items. The player can only hold a limited amount of both items. I wanted it to be limited to ensure the player can learn how to manage the resources that they have.

The player can also find materials around the level that they can use to upgrade their weapon to deal more damage and to provide a sense progression to the player.

Level Prototype

My approach for the level prototype was to showcase what a level in the actual game would look like.

I created the level to be underground in a mineshaft. With the title of the project being ‘Mines of Kardan’, I want the project to revolve around being underground. I created the prototype level to resemble a mineshaft to fit in this theme.

The level is small with only three areas, the starting area, a large room, and the boss arena. I wanted to keep the level small and condense in order to focus more on the gameplay features of the game.
