Scraps

Scraps is a first person shooter that takes place in a post apocalyptic world filled. The player must navigate their way through hordes of zombies while solving puzzles and navigating ruins to find precious resources. This was a project where I worked on a team to create a level.

Level Design

This project merged to levels to become one seamless level for the player to navigate. The two levels that were merged was a factory and a laboratory. My role in the project was to design the laboratory section of the level and make puzzle mechanics for the player to solve.

My approach to designing the laboratory section of the level was to take after Resident Evil. With the genre of this project being along the lines of being a survival shooter, I wanted to incorporate elements of the Resident Evil series to provide an engaging experience for players.

The players have options available to them for this section. The puzzles for the players to solve provide the players another way to take out the zombies in this level. If the prefer not to use up their ammunition, they could instead use the sound lure mechanic I created to lure the zombies under traps and use those traps to dispose of the enemies.

In the level there are several paths the player can take through the level, including optional paths that provide optional rewards for the player to find.

Mechanics

I created two different mechanics for this project. A sound lure mechanic, and a hydraulic press trap.

The sound lure mechanic works where a player presses a button that plays a sound on the corresponding speaker. The zombies will then make their way to the speaker that played the sound.

The hydraulic press is a trap capable of instantly defeating any zombies that are under it when it is activate. The player can use the sound lure mechanic to lure the zombies under the trap and take them out without having to drain their ammunition.
